Trump plans to meet Putin at the G20 summit

US President Donald Trump said he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G20 summit or the group of more industrialized nations that will be held this month in Japan.

"I will meet Putin in the G20," Trump told reporters at the White House.

However, the Kremlin said it has received no confirmation from Washington for the possible meeting.

"The US side has not initiated holding a special meeting," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Trump met Putin for the last time in his eye in July 2018 in Helsinki.

Trump has made it clear that he is striving for better relations with Russia and Putin specifically.

After the summit in Helsinki, he faced fierce criticism from US lawmakers - including some Republicans - who said the president had not held Putin accountable for Russian actions such as intervening in US presidential elections in 2016.

The G20 will meet on June 28 and 29 in Osaka.
