UFC 242: Khabib vs Poirier in Abu Dhabi

The UFC 242 will mark the return of Khabib Nurmagomedov. The lightweight champion will fight against Dustin Poirier at Abu Dhabi City in United Arab Emirates. The 30-year-old Daghestan athlete is absent from the scene since the victory against superstar Conor McGregor in October 2018 during UFC 229. The fight unleashed after the match with the Irish entourage led the promotion to disqualify Khabib and McGregor, with the first who served a nine-month ban.

The return of the champion: will Poirier give way?

In the time frame in which the undefeated Nurmagomedov, 27 career successes, remained away from the ring, the UFC established the match for the interim title.  It is here that 30-year-old Dustin Poirier came on the scene, capable of winning the interim belt with a convincing points win over co-challenger Max Holloway, the current featherweight title holder.

The Abu Dhabi match will therefore serve to establish a single and only champion in the light division: will Khabib confirm his unbeaten record and recover his kingdom or Poirier will be able to subvert the odds?

In fact, many people think that Nurmagomedov is the favorite of the match, thanks to his great skill in the fight on the ground with which he dominated his opponents.

Poirier is preferred in boxing, but even in this fundamental Russian has shown that he knows how to defend himself.  Overall, Khabib has so far proved to be a more complete fighter, capable of imposing its law on anyone who has come before it.  The same McGregor, a former champion in the featherweight and in the light, has had very little against "The Eagle", although partially justified by an absence of almost two years.

In his career, the athlete from Dagestan has so far obtained only overwhelming victories and few see Poirier as a rival capable of bothering him.  The state of form of the latter could however suggest a competitive encounter even with a champion like Nurmagomedov, determined to prove his superiority.

In case of victory the Russian could finally challenge Tony Ferguson, the one who is considered by many to be the most credible challenger.

The American has recently beaten Donald Cerrone for a technical knockout, confirming his status as a challenger.  However, the hypothesis of a rematch with McGregor is always in vogue, a solution that would undoubtedly make many fans happy and above all generate a lot of interest.
