Boxing: Beterbiev vs. Gvozdyk

Tonight in Philadelphia (USA) the summit in light heavyweight is rising!  IBF World Champion Artur Beterbiev and WBC Champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk will risk their title in a unification match.  Yesterday, both protagonists faced each other at the official "Weigh-In".

In a light-heavyweight merger battle, two unbeaten World Champions will face each other next night, trying to figure out who's number 1 in their limit.  Even if Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol are definitely part of the elite as well, the fight between Artur Beterbiev and Oleksandr Gvozdyk is an absolute highlight.

Artur Beterbiev weighed 79.15 kilograms.

Artur Beterbiev, who was able to win his 14 pro bouts prematurely, secured the IBF belt in November 2017, when he stopped the Berlin Enrico Kölling in the twelfth round.  Since then, he defended the World Cup belt only twice.  Against Callum Johnson and Radivoje Kalajdzic, the 34-year-old Russian, who now lives in Canada, prevailed too early.

In his biggest challenge so far, Beterbiev now has to deal with Oleksandr Gvozdyk.  The 32-year-old Ukrainian has been celebrating since December 2018 as WBC World Champion.

Gvozdyk, in Quebec, Canada, scored a co-victory in the eleventh round against long-time title-holder Adonis Stevenson.  However, in addition to the athletic victory, there was still a sad aftertaste: Stevenson suffered severe head injuries during the fight and even had to be transferred to a coma (BOXEN1 reported).

Oleksandr Gvozdyk brought 79.06 kilograms on record.

After that title victory, the Ukrainian defended his WBC belt against Frenchman Doudou Ngumbu, whom he defeated in the fifth round by TKO.  However, the WBC champion faces his greatest challenge yet against Artur Beterbiev.  Among the experts Oleksandr Gvozdyk is a slight favorite, as this is said to be the larger boxer class.  Nevertheless, the boxing fans can expect a fight at eye level!
