UFCApex: Woodley vs. Durinho

After a week of rest, the UFC resumes activities and to perform UFC Vegas , directly from UFC Apex, where the events of the Contender series take place.

In the main event of the night, former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley , who is looking for a rematch for the belt, faces Brazilian Gilbert Durinho , who seeks to stabilize himself at the top of the category.

Other relevant fights of the night are between heavyweight Blagoy Ivanov and Brazilian Augusto Sakai , straw athletes Mackenzie Dern and Hannah Cifers and, finally, the clash between the flies Tim Elliott and Brandon Royval .

The event will be broadcast exclusively on Canal Combate this Saturday, from 7:30 pm with the preliminary card, while the main portion is scheduled to start at 10:30 pm.

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (19-4-1 in MMA, 9-3-1 in the UFC) returns from a hiatus of more than a year after losing his belt. The American won the title by brutally knocking out devil Robbie Lawler, beginning an unlikely reign in one of the sport's toughest categories. Woodley defended his post against Stephen Thompson (2x), Demian Maia, and Darren Till, until he was dethroned by Kamaru Usman, in the last fight.

Woodley is one of the division's most solidly defensive fighters. The background in wrestling allows for a stellar fall defense - defeat for Usman aside - as well as explosive takedowns and a fierce ground and pound when on top. Explosion, in fact, is the trademark of the “Chosen One”. Tyron works with effective blitzes to hit his blows very hard, while cutting the octagon, cornering the opponent. Standing defense is among the best in the sport, supporting its conservative style - Woodley was repeatedly called annoying during his reign, for controlling his fights without much action, waiting for the moment to act, giving no gap to his opponents.

Gilbert “Durinho” Burns (18-3 in MMA, 11-3 in the UFC) is at the best moment of his career so far. The Brazilian climbed to the under 77kg category in 2020, coming from two lightweight victories. In the welterweight division, he dominated Alexey Kunchenko and Gunnar Nelson, making room for the biggest victory of his career, when he knocked out former challenger Demian Maia.

World champion of jiu-jitsu with and without gi, Gilbert has one of the division's sharpest ground games. Transitions and control from above are exceptional, and he usually gets to opponents' backs with ease, from where the offensive mentality usually leads to submissions. The takedowns are above average for a fighter originated in the gentle art, as is athletics. In recent years, he has developed a good offensive standing game, based on heavy hands and aggressive muay thai. His best hit is the overhand on the counterattack, which killed Demian, Dan Moret and Jason Saggo.
Woodley and Durinho are almost diametrically opposed. While the American is betting on strong wrestling , an explosion in blows and a conservative game, Durinho has elite jiu-jitsu, muay thai and an offensive mentality. Clearly, the fighter who succeeds in imposing his game will have an advantage. Here, we believe that the marriage of styles is favorable for the former champion, who has fall defense to keep the fight on his feet and must bet on standing defense and counterattacks to control the actions, winning a decision or a late knockout. This, of course, if Woodley does not show a significant drop in income due to the downtime.
