Bundesliga : Bayern vs S04

Champions Bayern Munich will kick off the 2020-21 Bundesliga campaign on Friday night with a clash with Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena. Bayern won their 30th top title last season and will be looking to continue to dominate German football this term, while Schalke will be determined to improve after a disappointing 2019-20 season.

Bayern proved too strong for the rest of last season, taking 82 points from 34 Bundesliga games to finish at the top of the group, 13 points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund. The Munich giants have now won the Bundesliga in their last eight seasons, but the 2019-20 campaign is even more special as they also won the German Cup and Champions League to make up the famous 3rd treble. In the history of the club, a feat that only Barcelona can do. A 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on 23 August helped them lift the European Cup, ending a stunning campaign for the club, which have already won their last 13 Bundesliga games and are now unbeaten defeat in the Bundesliga since the 2-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach in early December.

For Schalke, there is no inevitable fact that it was a disappointing 2019-20 campaign for the club as they finished 12th on the standings. The Blues were actually runner-up in the 2017-18 season but have struggled over the past few years, from a Champions League club to a team that has struggled for the top half. However, a new season offers new opportunities and that would certainly be a step in the right direction if they can take all three points against the champions on Friday night. It was a relatively quiet transfer window for David Wagner's side, but they lost key midfielder Weston McKennie to Juventus, while Alexander Nubel and Daniel Caligiuri were also gone. Schalke will not have Salif Sane due to a knee injury, but the away side has a full squad in preparation for the clash in Munich.
