Boxing: Benn vs Vargas

Conor Benn vs Samuel Vargas

Conor Benn will defend his WBA Continental welterweight title in London against the experienced Colombian Samuel Vargas.  There are also two women's World Cup matches on the program.

Boxing: Benn vs Vargas

The boxing world was amazed when the Briton Conor Benn (17-0-0, 11 KOs) was able to score a convincing victory over ex-IBO world champion Sebastian Formella last autumn.  The son of boxing legend Nigel Benn had not always shone in the past, which is why the further development of the 24-year-old welterweight came as a surprise.  Now Benn has to confirm his performance, because in the London Copper Box Arena he will face the battle-hardened South American Samuel Vargas (31-6-2, 14 KOs) on Saturday evening.

In England, at least since his duel with Amir Khan, he is no longer a stranger.  Vargas was able to get a hard knockdown at the time, having previously made acquaintance with the ground twice.  Tomorrow will show whether it will be a tough test for Benn too.  At today's weigh-in, both boxers presented themselves in good shape and undercut the weight limit of 66.678 kg.

The nicknames of Shannon Courtenay (6-1-0, 3 KOs) and Ebanie Bridges (5-0-0, 2 KOs) promise a certain entertainment value.  In addition, the vacant WBA world bantamweight title is at stake, which makes things even more explosive.  Courtenay, who is the favorite home boxer, stayed below the limit (53.525 kg), as did the Australian Bridges.  After heated arguments at the press conference, boxing fans can look forward to an action-packed battle.

The return of WBO World Champion Savannah Marshall (9-0-0, 7 KOs) is also eagerly awaited.  The middleweight, trained by Peter Fury, was supposed to box against Femke Hermans, but since a Belgian team member tested positive for Covid-19, a replacement had to be found five days before the event.  This now comes in the form of Maria Lindberg (19-6-2, 10 KOs).  With her 70.2 kg, the Swede could have boxed almost a weight class lower and is one of the reasons why she goes into the duel with Marshall (72.2 kg) as a blatant outsider.
