WCQ: Wales vs Austria

Wales will host Austria, which will have an important match in the play-off round to compete for a place in the final to find out the owners of the remaining 3 tickets to Qatar. Coach Robert Page’s teachers and students have a bit of an advantage when playing at home, but the next 90 minutes will be extremely difficult for both teams when the strength of the two sides is quite balanced.

In the group stage, Wales cannot compete with Belgium, which has many stars in the squad. Coach Robert Page’s teachers and students are only second in Group E and 5 points behind Belgium after 8 matches, so they have to attend the play-off round to compete for one of the three European tickets to Qatar. The first opponent was very difficult, to overcome Wales may need more help from the god of luck.

The good news is that they have played very steadily in the last 6 matches of the group stage, Wales is unbeaten with a record of 3 wins and 3 draws. The most remarkable thing is that they successfully held the Belgian fire in the last match to beat the Czech Republic by exactly 1 point, thereby getting a place in the play-off round.

Austria played very well at Euro 2020 but when they returned to the VL WC 2022, they were unable to maintain stability. In fact, coach Franco Foda’s teachers and students only ranked fourth in Group F with 5 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses after 10 matches, disappointing numbers. Fortunately, good performance in the Nations League has helped Austria get a place in the play-off round, this is their last chance to participate in Qatar.

In the last two matches of the group stage, coach Franco Foda’s teachers and students seemed to regain their form when they respectively defeated Israel and Moldova with a convincing score. Austria once caused a lot of difficulties for Italy in the 1/8 round of Euro 2020 and only lost in extra time. The next match will be their answer to experts’ doubts about the recent decline, the development will be interesting until the last minutes.
