After a draw at home against Lens last weekend, PSG officially won the Ligue 1 season 2021-22. Thus, the trip to Strasbourg’s field is only honorable with Mauricio Pochettino’s team. In the context that the opponent is in desperate need of points to race for a ticket to the European Cup, it is not an unlikely scenario for PSG to hold a grudge.
Strasbourg is having a successful season beyond expectations and the last 4 rounds will be very important for coach Julien Stephan’s team. Currently, the Stade de la Meinau team is ranked 6th with 56 points, 22 points behind the top team, PSG. However, Strasbourg is only 3 points behind Rennes in 3rd place and the door to next season’s Champions League is still open for them. Last weekend Strasbourg could not win points when they lost 0-1 on the field of extreme king Lille.
However, that the loss to Lille was the first time in 5 matches that Strasbourg did not score a goal and also the first defeat in the last 5 matches. Before losing to Lille, Strasbourg went through a series of 11 unbeaten matches in all competitions. Through 17 home matches, coach Julien Stephan’s army won 10, drew 4 and lost only 3. In fact, Strasbourg was unbeaten in the last 7 home matches and won 5 of them. Since their most recent promotion in the 2017-18 season, Strasbourg has lost just one of their three Ligue 1 home matches against PSG.
After surprisingly letting Lille pass last season, PSG returned to the Ligue 1 throne quite easily. It is predictable because PSG’s strength completely surpasses the rest of the tournament. Bringing back 78 points through 34 rounds, PSG is now 13 points behind Marseille. Of course, it cannot be said that PSG had a successful season, because Ligue 1 is the only title this team can win after being eliminated in the Champions League and the French Cup.
PSG have an impressive head-to-head record recently against Strasbourg and have won 16 of the last 23 head-to-head matches between the two teams, in contrast to Strasbourg’s meager four wins in this period. Besides, PSG are unbeaten in the last 34/38 matches at the Ligue 1 playground. The away team is also on a 5-match unbeaten streak (draw 1, win 4). However, PSG also only won 9/18 away matches in Ligue 1 this season, a quite modest number compared to their strength.
