FRA: Montpellier vs PSG

Montpellier welcomed PSG to De la Mosson’s home ground in the penultimate match in Ligue 1. The early successful relegation and no longer had the opportunity to compete for a ticket to the European Cup made Montpellier perform very badly recently. In that context, it is difficult for Montpellier to avoid defeat against the defending champion.

Montpellier had just suffered a 1-2 defeat as a guest of Clermont in the previous round. This defeat also marked a period of decline in the performance of coach Olivier Dall’Oglio’s teachers and students. Accordingly, in the last 7 rounds Montpellier could not win (draw 2, lose 5). Victory over Bordeaux in mid-March is the last time Montpellier has had joy. Having enough safe points to stay relegation and not being able to squeeze into the top 6 made Montpellier play sporadically.

The home team of De la Mosson is currently 13th in the standings with 43 points. The defense is a black point for Montpellier, when they have conceded 11 goals in the last 4 matches. Not to mention Montpellier is going on a six-match winless streak at home since beating Monaco in January (draw 3, lose 3). So don’t put too much hope on Montpellier, especially when their opponent is named PSG.

After officially returning to the throne of French football, PSG has had a subjective competition in the last few rounds. Last weekend, teacher and coach Mauricio Pochettino let Troyes hold 2-2 despite leading by 2 goals after only 25 minutes of play. It was also PSG’s 3rd draw in a row, but at the same time extended their unbeaten streak to 7 (draw 3, win 4). From the beginning of the season, PSG received only 4 defeats, 24 victories to bring back 80 points and is currently 12 points ahead of Marseille.

In this season, PSG do not have a very good away record. They ranked 2nd in terms of points earned away from home, behind even Marseille. PSG have only won 3 of their last 10 away matches and have kept only 1 clean sheet in the last 12 away from home in Ligue 1. A bright spot for the visitors is that they have won their last 6 matches against Montpellier with defeat. The most recent took place in 2019.
